As we age, the natural collagen and elastin in the skin lessens, as cells lose their ability to produce more of their youthful component. Dr. Soleymani and and staff at Dermio Dermatology in Munster, Dyer, Valparaiso, and Crown Point, IN can help to rejuvenate the looks of their patients from the Chicago Metropolitan and Northwest Indiana area.

What Imperfections Can BOTOX® Be Used to Fix?

BOTOX® is used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. BOTOX® works by paralyzing the underlying facial muscles. The treatment is frequently used to treat the lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet. Since BOTOX® works by paralyzing subdermal muscles and blocking chemical stimulation, it can also be used to treat muscle spasms like eye twitches.

How Effective is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® effects will last between four to six months depending on the patient. As muscle activity slowly returns, lines, and wrinkles will begin to reappear and in order to maintain a smooth and youthful appearance, follow up visits will be necessary. Over time, with regular BOTOX® treatments, the wrinkles will have a less severe appearance as the muscles have been trained to relax. BOTOX® is most effective on dynamic wrinkles, the ones that appear when the face moves, such as frown lines. This is because BOTOX® works by paralyzing the muscles beneath the skin, smoothing the exterior appearance.

What Should Be Expected During a BOTOX® Treatment?

A BOTOX® treatment typically involves several injections of the solution into the area to be treated. The provider will use a small, thin needle and may use a topical anesthetic cream to decrease any sensation or discomfort. The treatment only takes a few minutes and you should see the effects of the muscle relaxation within a few days. The provider will need to know if you are taking any medications or supplements as they can thin the blood, causing a minor reaction.

Does BOTOX® Have Any Side Effects?

Like all medical treatments, there are side effects associated with BOTOX®.  The most common are difficulty in swallowing or dry eyes. Some patients may experience swelling around the eyes and difficulty blinking. Potential side effects will be discussed with the patient before the course of treatment begins. The occurrence of these side effects is rare, and if a patient experiences any additional or unexpected symptoms, they should contact their provider.
