What is SRT treatment?

Superficial radiation therapy (SRT) is a type of skin treatment that can eliminate cancerous cells in your skin. The treatment delivers specific amounts of external radiation into your cancerous lesions to destroy the tumor and prevent it from producing new cancer cells.

Unlike traditional skin cancer treatments, which require your dermatology specialist to cut into your skin, SRT requires no cutting, incisions, or sutures. After SRT treatment, you can expect a faster recovery time and a less painful experience than it would be after a surgical excision.

At Dermio Dermatology, SRT can be used on benign lesions (non-cancerous). Your practitioner can determine whether an abnormal growth or mark is benign or cancerous.

How can SRT treat skin lesions?

SRT can treat several types of cancerous and non-cancerous lesions, including:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

BCC is a common type of skin cancer that SRT can effectively treat. These lesions form as pearly, red bumps, scaly patches of skin, or flat, waxy lesions. While BCCs may not spread to other areas of the body, they might cause extensive skin damage.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

SCC is often more aggressive than BCC. They often appear as pearl-like bumps or flat, waxy lesions that can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Without proper treatment, SCCs may spread to other areas of your body.

Keloids

While keloids are benign lesions, they may be a cosmetic concern if you feel uncomfortable about its appearance. These non-cancerous growths develop from an overproduction of collagen.

However, SRT treatment isn’t effective for melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer), which typically forms from an abnormal mole.
